Fragments · Poetry

take care of yourself today

because i don't want to write your eulogy tomorrow

"a live well lived"

is intended for someone old and grey,

a phrase to utter in the receiving line to the tearful widow and her children

know this,

when we have been wrinkled at the hands of time

our hair is thin and grey

and we have lived a life full of wonder, heartbreak and upheaval

i will write of all of the times we had,

i will honour the memories the best way i know how

i will even write your eulogy, if you promise me this:

you'll take care of yourself today,

so i don't have to write your eulogy tomorrow.
